The thermometer goes over 38 \u00b0C, the technical service hotline is smoking, and dozens of companies discover, in the worst possible way, that their refrigeration system wasn&#8217;t prepared for the heat. Cold rooms that won&#8217;t drop in temperature, compressors tripping on high pressure, lost product, and emergency invoices that hurt more than the heat itself.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">And the most frustrating part is that most of these breakdowns were preventable.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">In this article, we tell you why summer is the acid test for any industrial refrigeration system, what are the five critical points you must check before the next heatwave hits, and what signs warn you that your equipment is working at its limit.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\">Why extreme heat punishes your installation so much<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">A refrigeration system works by transferring heat from the inside of the cold room to the outside environment. The problem is obvious: the hotter that outside environment is, the harder it is for the system to get rid of the heat.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">With 40 \u00b0C out on the street, the condensing pressure skyrockets. The compressor works against a much higher pressure, consumes more energy to produce the same cooling, and its performance (the famous COP) can drop between 20 and 30% compared to a mild day. That is to say: you pay more for electricity precisely in the months when the rate is most expensive, and you also subject the compressor\u2014the heart and the most expensive component of your system\u2014to its maximum stress of the year.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">That is why it is no coincidence that most serious breakdowns are concentrated between July and August. Summer doesn&#8217;t break systems: it simply brings to light all the problems that had been incubating for months.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">The 5 critical points you must check before the heatwave<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1. Dirty condensers: the silent enemy<\/b> A condenser with its coils covered in dust, lint, or grease cannot evacuate heat properly. The consequence is direct: the condensing temperature rises, and every extra degree roughly translates to a 3% increase in electrical consumption. A condenser that hasn&#8217;t been cleaned in a year could be costing you 15-20% more in electricity without anyone noticing. Condenser cleaning is the intervention with the best cost-benefit ratio in all of refrigeration maintenance. Before summer, it is simply mandatory.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">2. Adjusted refrigerant charge<\/b> A small leak that went unnoticed in winter turns into a serious problem in summer. With less refrigerant than necessary, the system loses capacity just when it needs it most, the compressor lengthens its running cycles, and superheating spirals out of control. Verifying the charge and checking the tightness of the circuit before the heat arrives prevents scares and, incidentally, complies with the obligations of F-gas regulations.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">3. Pressure switches and safety elements<\/b> The high-pressure switch is what will decide if your system keeps running or stops at the worst possible moment. Checking its setting and correct operation is essential: a poorly adjusted pressure switch can cause unnecessary stops or, worse still, fail to protect the compressor when it&#8217;s truly needed.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\"><b data-path-to-node=\"13\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">4. Condenser fans<\/b> A fan that spins slower than it should, with worn bearings or dirty blades, reduces the airflow over the condenser and aggravates all of the above. In systems with multiple fans, a stopped one can go undetected for weeks&#8230; until the heatwave hits and the system has no margin left.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">5. Doors, curtains, and work habits<\/b> In the middle of the season, cold room doors are opened more often and for longer periods. Each opening introduces hot, humid air that the system has to cool down again. Checking door seals, PVC strip curtains, and automatic closers, and reminding staff of the importance of minimizing openings, is free and has a direct impact on energy consumption and temperature stability.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"15\">Signs that your system is working at its limit<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\">If you spot any of these symptoms, your system is asking you for help before a breakdown:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"17\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">High-pressure trips<\/b>, even if they are sporadic and the equipment restarts on its own.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Compressors that barely stop:<\/b> operating cycles that are increasingly longer to maintain the same temperature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Cold room temperatures that &#8220;can&#8217;t quite get down&#8221;<\/b> during the middle of the day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Ice or frost where there shouldn&#8217;t be any<\/b>, a sign of charge or expansion problems.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17,4,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17,4,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">An abnormal jump in the electricity bill<\/b> compared to the same month the previous year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18\">Ignoring these signs in July is playing Russian roulette with your stored product.
